We have recently added a number of new daylilies to our collection. Pictured are two that are flowering at the moment.
Tapestry of Dreams is described as a single daylily, pale magenta rose with deep rose purple eye zone and deep green throat. It is semi evergreen and has an 8cm bloom on a 46cm stem.
Chardonnay is a double daylily, near white with a yellow halo and chartreuse throat. It is a semi-evergreen rebloomer with a 10 cm bloom on a 50cm stem. Unfortunately, neither of these are available for sale at the moment, but there are plenty of others.
Like irises, daylilies are extremely easy to grow in Australia. They are drought and frost resistant and can be planted in all climatic zones at any time of the year. Daylily flowers tend towards the warmer colours and can be found in many shades of yellow, pink, peach, red, maroon and orange. Petals on daylilies take many forms, ranging from single to double and even spider like where the petals are much longer than their width.
Although flowering will be optimal in areas of full sun, daylilies will also cope with partly shaded positions, producing many blooms that last for a day or two for much of the year.
Plant your daylilies to a depth of about 30cm over a mound in the middle of your hole. Water in well to begin with, then give them a drink once a week until established.
Daylilies multiply quickly in the ground and can be divided every one or two years. They can also be grown successfully in pots if gardens are unavailable, but will require a little more attention to watering and fertilizing if this is the case.
And what a lovely way to wish Mum a Happy Mother's Day! We have a special offer for a limited number of customers. Six mixed unmarked daylilies of our choice for just $50 with free postage.
